Last Friday, we gathered at Exit Skateshop in Philadelphia to celebrate the release of my first full length, Crooked In My Mind. Special thanks to David Shiraki, Organized Grime, Exit Skateshop, Run For Cover Records, Vinnie Caruana, Dads, Modern Baseball, Turnover, Matt Wren, Dani Fresh, and Alex Henery (who made this video). And a huge thank you to everyone who came to the show and sang along. It was perfect.

My full US summer tour starts in less than a month. I’ll see you all soon.

POZ Review: Koji - Crooked In My Mind

Though Crooked In My Mind will be his first full-length release, Pennsylvania’s Koji has spent the past couple years establishing himself as someone who is a true musician and activist, even donating a dollar from every preorder of this LP to some of his favorite causes. He is one of those people that bring hope to the music world, not only in the sense that there are still non-egotistical, genuinely unselfish people in this industry out there, but also true musicians. This album is not only lyrically complex, deep, and heartfelt, but its musicianship is outstanding, especially in a world of undistinguishable, minimal guitar riffs that hold nothing of their own but “being catchy.”

The opening track, “Chasing A Ghost,” starts with sweet acoustic riffs about going after something in your life that escapes you to the point of almost wondering if it is real, especially given the copious amounts of effort you may have put into it. “Searching for a girl whose name that I knew but if you ask it not remember / Like chasing a ghost in your house that’s not there…I’ve done all I can and I’ve gave what I can give.” It speaks to real undying commitment, no matter what the cause.

It also looks back at a part or season of your life: “It was a beautiful time in my life”, with an equally beautiful violin accompaniment. This is the perfect start to a new beginning, not only to the record but also for Koji himself.

The second track, “The Near and Far,” is in complete contrast to the light of “Chasing A Ghost,” bringing out a darker sound, lined with punk-influenced instruments, while “Spinning Silent” is a strong ode to moving forward and minding your actions, both in good and bad ways: “Consequence any path we take for every move we make/there is a ripple there is a wave” while also acknowledging that this isn’t always easy and can find you at troublesome times in life: “I’m a wreck if you’ve ever seen a mess.”
